市内中心の「シカゴ・トリビューン」誌に対し、「シカゴ・ディフェンダー」は主にアフリカ系アメリカ人によって、広く支持されてきました。購読者の数は約50万人。
創刊当時は週刊、1956年からは日刊、2003年からは週刊にもどり、2019年７月からデジタル紙面もスタート。今もなお歴史上「もっともパワフルなメディア」として、知られています。
